Agency AI vs Shopify Campaign Autopilot: What Each Actually Does
Shopify Campaign Autopilot is free, built into the admin, and still in early access. Agency AI is $59 a month and installs from the App Store today. The honest comparison is not which is better, it is that they automate different amounts of your advertising, and the deciding question is whether Google Ads and creative generation are in your plan.
Everything below comes from Shopify's own launch post and Help Center pages and from Agency AI's published product facts, checked August 5, 2026.
Definition: Campaign Autopilot is Shopify's built-in marketing automation that plans and runs campaigns across Meta, Microsoft Advertising, Shop campaigns and email from the Shopify admin, with each tactic requiring merchant approval by default. Shopify launched it in early access on June 17, 2026, free on paid plans.

How to Check Whether You Even Have Autopilot
Because it is early access, the first question is access. Shopify's stated requirements: a paid plan other than Agentic, Shopify Payments activated, at least one product, and a store that is not password protected.
Eligible stores see it under Growth, then Autopilot, in the admin. If it is not there, you are not in the rollout yet, and no setting changes that, which is itself an argument for tools any store can install today.
What Autopilot Genuinely Gets Right
It would be silly to pretend the free default is weak. Autopilot reads your products, customers and sales data and proposes campaigns you approve from one queue. It added Microsoft Advertising within weeks of launch, with ChatGPT Ads and Snapchat listed as coming soon.
Shop campaigns give products distribution inside the Shop app, and email rides the existing Shopify Messaging rates. There is no fee for any of it, you pay only the ad spend itself.
The design philosophy is also right: Shopify's own docs say every tactic requires your approval in Pending actions before it runs, with an optional permission setting if you want tactics running on their own. Guardrails cover a monthly ceiling plus target ROAS, regions and languages.
For a store that wants Meta basics handled from the admin with zero new cost, and that has an invite, Autopilot is a genuinely good answer.
Where the Gap Opens
Three places, and they are structural rather than version-number complaints.
Google Ads is absent. Autopilot's paid channels are Meta and Microsoft. Google Shopping and Performance Max, where product-based stores typically find their most efficient converting traffic, are not on the roadmap Shopify has published.
A store serious about paid acquisition ends up running Google somewhere anyway, and then owns exactly the two-silo coordination problem automation was supposed to remove.
Creative is your problem. Shopify says it plainly in the launch post: Autopilot uses your existing product images and catalog, it is not generating AI creative on your behalf.
Independent measurement puts creative at roughly half of advertising's sales impact, 49% in NCSolutions' 2023 analysis, and Meta's fatigue system punishes repetition with rising cost per result. A planner that cannot make new ads leaves the biggest lever unpulled.
The Meta channel is Advantage+, which you could run anyway. Autopilot's Meta campaigns are Advantage+ campaigns, the same automated product Meta now makes the default for sales objectives, with the same preset controls. The planning convenience is real; the underlying ad tech is not something extra.
The Honest Decision
Take the free tool if you have the invite, spend mostly on Meta, and your product photos carry your ads. It costs nothing and handles the basics with your approval on everything.
Add or choose Agency AI when any of these is true: Google is part of your acquisition, you need a creative pipeline rather than a photo library, or you want the coordination between platforms to be the system's job. Those three are precisely the lines Autopilot has not crossed.
Running both is not contradictory either: Autopilot for Shop campaigns and email, Agency AI as the paid-ads system across Meta and Google. Just never let two tools manage the same Meta account simultaneously, one owner per channel, or you reintroduce the auction overlap Meta's own docs warn about.
What It Costs Either Way
The only real cost question is what $59 a month buys that free does not: the Google side of your funnel, generated creative on demand, the agentic engine watching both platforms against your break-even ROAS, and the AI Strategist you can ask about performance in plain language.
Against the agency alternative both tools are rounding errors, typical management retainers run $1,000 to $3,000 a month, which is the comparison that actually decides budgets, and it is covered in our agency versus AI guide.
Final Thoughts
Shopify building Autopilot validates the whole category: ad automation with human approval is now the default assumption, not a pitch. The free tier covers Meta-plus-Microsoft basics for stores that can get in.
The paid layer earns its fee where stores grow past that, on Google, on creative volume, and on cross-platform coordination. Decide by which of those you need this quarter, not by the price gap, which is one lunch.
